Abstract:Information processing in primary visual cortex (V1) is at the core of visual system research, and traditional studies have largely focused on feedforward projection. However, feedforward mechanisms alone cannot fully account for neural activity within V1. Recent studies indicate that reentry from higher cortical areas plays a critical role in modulating V1 function. This review examines the technological advancements in studying reentry from higher cortical regions. Furthermore, it summarizes the core roles of reentry in a variety of cognitive processing, including visual attention, mental imagery and working memory. Drawing on this body of evidence, we discuss the opportunities and challenges that reentry within V1 presents for advancing our understanding of human cognitive processing.
