A Literature Review and Prospects of Metacognition in the Field of Entrepreneurship

Abstract:Metacognition refers to an individual's awareness of their own cognitive processes, as well as the active monitoring and regulation of these processes. It is crucial for understanding how entrepreneurs think, develop and adjust their cognition in complex environments. However, there is currently a lack of systematic review on entrepreneurial metacognition. This paper reviews the relevant literature on metacognition in the field of entrepreneurship, summarizes the formation mechanism of metacognition of entrepreneurs and its impact on entrepreneurial results, and builds a research framework on entrepreneurial metacognition, revealed that entrepreneurial metacognition is influenced by contextual and trait, and impacts behavior, emotions, capabilities, decision-making, and entrepreneurial performance. Future research can further explore the concept and theoretical foundations of entrepreneurial metacognition, exploring its antecedents to better understand its role and value, and clarify the mechanisms and boundary conditions of entrepreneurial metacognition's impact on entrepreneurial outcomes, providing guidance for entrepreneurial practice; and improve related theories on entrepreneurial cognition and construct a theory of entrepreneurial metacognition within the Chinese context.
