Abstract:To address the limitations of questionnaire-based methods in ecological validity, this study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior to code and analyze 14,662 user comments on marriage-related topics from social media platforms. Regression analysis revealed that more positive attitudes toward marriage and stronger perceptions of norms to marry were associated with higher intention to marry. In contrast, a greater sense of behavioural control in decision-making was associated with lower marital intention. Furthermore, the positive effect of normative beliefs on marriage intention weakened as individuals' tendency to comply with others' expectations decreased. Machine learning analysis also identified motivation to comply with norms as a key factor in distinguishing between individuals with varying levels of marriage intention. By leveraging ecologically valid data, this study verifies and extends the application of the Theory of Planned Behavior in the context of marriage decision-making.
