Abstract:When exploring loss aversion, researchers focused on comparing the subjective values of loss and gain, while neglecting the role of probability. We propose that loss aversion is due to the relatively low probability of loss, which makes losses are more salience. In Experiment 1, using a roulette task, it was found that individuals experienced stronger psychological reactions to losses when the probability of losses was low. Experiment 2, employing the BeanFest paradigm, showed that participants reacted more quickly to negative stimuli and exhibited lower recognition accuracy under low-loss probability conditions. In Experiment 3, a simulated lottery task revealed that higher loss probabilities led to a reduced tendency for loss aversion. Together, these findings suggested that probability of losses had an effect on loss aversion, with individuals being more sensitive to losses when the probability is lower.
