Abstract:Intertemporal decision-making is an important type of decision involving an individual's wealth, health, and happiness. With the increasing number of bilinguals, dealing with intertemporal decisions under different linguistic frameworks has become more and more common. Language may influence intertemporal decision through two ways:1) The future time reference of one’s first language may exert a long-term influence on intertemporal preferences;2) Using a foreign language may also induce a short-term impact on one's decision process. Future studies may adopt a holistic perspective, viewing language effects as a combination of the long-term influence of the first language and the short-term influence of using a foreign language. Besides, based on emerging technologies such as large language models and semantic analysis, future studies may further explore the cognitive mechanisms and practical applications of these language effects.
