Abstract：The current study aimed to explore the mediating role of work affect in the relationship between
transformational leadership and follower’s mental health. A field survey of 550 employees was conducted to test
hypotheses. Results from structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that 1) Transformational leadership was
positively correlated with follower’s mental health and pleasant affect but was negatively correlated with their
unpleasant affect 2) both high-activation and low-activation unpleasant affect were positively correlated with
follower’s mental health, and high-activation pleasant affect was negatively correlated with the follower’s mental
health. Moreover, these three dimensions of work affect fully mediated the effect of transformational leadership
on follower’s mental health. All in all, transformational leadership has a positive effect on follower’s mental
health through work affect.
