| The Relationship between Nostalgia and Pro-Social Behavior of College Students: The Mediating Role of Meaning in Life |

Abstract The present research aimed to explore the relation between nostalgia and pro-social behavior, as well as the psychological mechanism.The present study combined a questionnaire survey ( study 1) and an experimental design(study 2) to investigate the effect of nostalgia on Chinese college students’ pro-social behavior, and also examine the mediating role of meaning in life. A sample of Three hundred college students from three universities of different provinces participated in study 1. They were asked to complete a questionnaire containing nostalgia scale, meaning in life scale and pro-social behavior scale. The results indicated that:(1) Nostalgia positively predicted college students’ pro-social behavior. (2) Meaning in life mediated the positive relationship between nostalgia and pro-social behavior, the proportion of the mediating effect was 31.52%. Being a questionnaire survey of self report, study 1 cannot support a causal inference among these variables. Conclusion was drawn that nostalgia may increase directly pro-social behaviour, and still increase pro-social behaviour through meaning in life. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications, as well as the limitations of the present study and the directions of future research were discussed.
