Abstract Deception has played an important role in human life. Mock crime scenes in the laboratory have been used as a research tool for deception study. However, generating scenarios requires is very costive and difficult to manipulate effectively. Virtual reality technology has provided low-cost, ecological, quantifiable, and manipulative experimental scenarios for deception study. This paper summarizes the recent progress of virtual reality technology and its application in deception research, and discusses the future applications of virtual reality in the research field.
