Abstract A survey of 1,047 family groups was conducted to explore the intergenerational transmission of familism values and the mechanisms of the role of parenting styles and family functioning. The results found that familism values have intergenerational transmission effects in Chinese families. In the chain mediation model, it was found that the mother's familism values had a significant direct intergenerational transmission effect, whereas the father's familism values did not. As well, both mothers' and fathers' familism values have indirect intergenerational transmission effects through the separate mediation of positive parenting styles or the chain mediation of positive parenting styles and family functions. The results reveal the intergenerational development of familism values in Chinese families.
