Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of social exclusion on pro-social behavior and the mediating role of materialism. The Study 1 adopted a survey research to examine the relationship among social exclusion, materialism and pro-social behavior. The Study 2 manipulated social exclusion by recall paradigm, so as to examine its impact on materialism and pro-social behavior. These two studies consistently showed that social exclusion negatively predicted pro-social behavior. Moreover, materialism played partial mediating role between social exclusion and pro-social behavior. This current study reveals the underlying mechanism of the effect of social exclusion and pro-social behaviour, which enriches the research on materialism.
