Abstract The present study aimed to explore the relationship between family socioeconomic status and mathematical achievements, and the chain mediating mechanism of parent-child communication and academic self-efficacy, using the sample of 1811 eighth grade students and their parents from the Investigation of Curriculum and Instruction in China (ICIC). The results showed that :(1) Family socioeconomic status had a significant positive effect on themathematical achievements;(2) Parent-child communication and academic self-efficacy played a partial mediating role between family socioeconomic status and mathematical achievements;(3) Parent-child communication and academic self-efficacy played a chain mediating role between family socioeconomic status and mathematical achievements.
