Abstract Self-concept clarity refers to the extent to which the contents of an individual’s self- concept are clearly and confidently defined, internally consistent, as well as temporally stable. We introduce the characteristics and development of self-concept clarity, then review evidence for the effects of self-concept clarity on mental health, physical health, and coping strategy, respectively. Moreover, drawing from self-discrepancy theory, goal-setting theory, and self-regulation theory, we further discuss the potential mechanism that links self-concept clarity to positive outcomes. Accordingly, we propose mindfulness as an effective approach to improve an individual’s self-concept clarity and make prospects for future research from theoretical and practical perspectives.
