Abstract This study aimed to examine the relationship between family function and prosocial behavior of left-behind children and its underlying mechanism. 530 rural left-behind children in primary school were recruited to complete the Family Function Scale, the Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire and the Interpersonal Response Index. The results showed that: (1)Family function significantly positively predicted the prosocial behavior of left-behind children; (2)Perspective taking and empathy concern played mediating roles in the relationship between family function and prosocial behavior of left-behind children, while the mediating roles of fantasy and personal sadness were not significant. The current study reveals the relationship between family function and prosocial behavior of left-behind children and its underlying mechanism, which provides new ideas for the cultivation of prosocial behavior of left-behind children.
