Abstract Negative emotional experience caused by the breakdown or damage of social relationships is called social pain. Social pain not only brings us disastrous emotional experience, but is also a major cause of many mental disorders. Uncovering the neurocognitive mechanism of emotion regulation of social pain, improves the theory of emotion regulation and helps relive social pain in patients with mental disorders. Based on the review of the literatures on the emotion regulation of non-social and social pain, this paper points out the unsolved problems in this field, and provides feasible research ideas and suggestions.
