Abstract Group entitativity refers to the degree to which a group is perceived as an entity. Previous studies mainly focused on how the consistency of action goals influences the group entitativity. While, besides the action goal, the action means is also included in action patterns. The current research investigated how he consistency of action goals and the consistency of action means influence group entitativity. It was found that the consistency of the action goals of the members of the group influences the group entitativity, and only when the behavior occurs in the group situation and conforms to the principle of rationality, the consistency of the action means plays a moderating role in it. These results indicate that only when the goal-directed actions of group members meet the principle of rationality, people can perceive the group entitativity according to the consistency of action goal and the action means.
