Abstract The present study explored the developmental trajectory of Chinese children’s verbal updating and its relationtoworking memory and inhibition control. In Study 1, 59 children aged from 21 to 36 months were tested whether they can update what they saw by what they heard usingverbal updating tasks. In Study 2, 95 children were tested in verbal updating, working memory and inhibition control tasks. Results showedthat: 1)the developmental pattern of Chinese children's verbal updatingwas generally consistent with the previous western studies (younger children rely more on visual information to update information, while older children gradually master the ability of verbal updating); 2) inhibition control can uniquely predict verbal updating.
