Abstract This study aims to explore the relationship between two subtypes of narcissism, interpersonal trust and self-aggression in criminals. 534 prisoners were investigated with pathological narcissism questionnaire, general trust scale and self-directed aggression scale, and 493 valid questionnaires were collected. Results: Overt narcissism has a marginal significant negative predictive effect on self-aggression, while covert narcissism has a significant positive predictive effect on self-aggression. Under the mediating effect of interpersonal trust, overt narcissism and covert narcissism have negative and positive indirect effects on self-aggression respectively.
